Alyia Gaskins Becomes First Black Mayor of Alexandria

Alyia Gaskins has made history as the first Black woman elected mayor of Alexandria, Virginia. Gaskins, who graduated from the Georgetown Urban & Regional Planning Program in 2019, attributes her success to her education and the skills she developed there.

After her election, Gaskins returned to Georgetown's campus to discuss how her studies equipped her to handle the technical and conceptual aspects of city planning. She emphasized the importance of sharing one's perspective, encouraging others to recognize the value of their unique viewpoints.
