Cornell Advocates for Circular Construction to Boost Economy

Staff Report / FLXlocal.org

Cornell University in Ithaca has released a white paper detailing how shifting from demolition practices to a circular construction economy could generate significant economic activity, create thousands of green jobs, and help meet climate goals while decreasing landfill use. The report, made public on October 3, aims to provide guidance for policymakers, state agencies, and local governments.

Felix Heisel, assistant professor of architecture and director of the Circular Construction Lab at Cornell University, emphasized that deconstruction and reuse can significantly enhance economic, environmental, and social value compared to traditional demolition and landfilling methods. He noted that these practices could be vital in achieving New York state's economic and climate objectives.
