TSA prepares for busy travel season with enhanced security measures.
Reviewed by Valencia Perez / Albanylocal.org
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is gearing up for the busiest summer travel season with a spike in checkpoint volumes at airports in Upstate New York and across the nation. TSA has experienced some of the busiest days in its 22-year history since mid-May, with nearly 2.5 million people being screened daily, up by several hundred thousand since last month.
Albany International Airport (ALB) is expecting high travel volumes, along with airports in Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo. Travelers are advised to arrive at least two hours before their scheduled departure due to increased checkpoint volumes and ongoing construction at ALB.
TSA is implementing enhanced security measures, including credential authentication technology (CAT) units at travel document checking podiums, which verifies passengers' IDs and matches their faces without storing photos. Passengers are reminded to check for prohibited items, pack liquids in checked bags if over 3.4 ounces, and declare firearms in checked baggage to avoid penalties and potential law enforcement involvement.
TSA PreCheck® members should ensure their known traveler number (KTN) is in their airline reservation to receive expedited screening benefits. For more information on enrolling or renewing in TSA PreCheck, travelers can visit tsa.gov/precheck.
Travelers are reminded to respect TSA officers and other frontline airport and airline employees who are working tirelessly to ensure safe and secure travel. For any questions or assistance, passengers can contact TSA via text, social media, or the TSA Contact Center.
As part of security measures, starting on May 7, 2025, travelers must have a REAL ID or another acceptable form of ID for domestic air travel. For more information on acceptable IDs, visit the TSA website. Travelers are encouraged to report suspicious activities through the "If You See Something. Say Something®" initiative.
