Gas Leak Forces Evacuation at Lakeland Elementary School

Staff Report / lakelandlocal.org

On the morning of October 19, 2023, the Lakeland Fire Department was called to Sleepy Hill Elementary School at 2285 Sleepy Hill Rd. due to reports of a propane and carbon monoxide leak in the cafeteria. The call came in around 11:35 AM.

Upon their arrival, firefighters confirmed that the leak was limited to the cafeteria area. In response, they evacuated the building as a safety precaution for students, faculty, and staff. Some individuals on the scene reported symptoms including lightheadedness and dizziness.

Polk County Fire Rescue assisted by taking six adults to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. Additional individuals experienced symptoms but chose not to be transported.

Firefighters identified the source of the leak and successfully shut off the propane supply. They then ventilated the building to manage the situation.

As of now, the building remains evacuated while air quality levels are being monitored to ensure safety for re-entry. The Lakeland Fire Department will continue collaborating with school officials to prioritize the health and safety of everyone involved.

The situation was later updated, stating that command has been terminated and management of the scene has been passed back to the school.
